Studio Information

  Control Room

The Makoché control room (approximately 24' X 28') is a "reflection free zone" design; a room large enough to allow for multiple producers and musicians and yet provide accurate listening. To quote designer Bill Morrison, "One of the main objectives in control room design is to create an environment for the accurate monitoring of the spatial, tonal and reverberation characteristics of the music being recorded and produced. The room must be designed such that the loudspeaker system's acoustical output does not strongly reflect from room boundaries into the engineer's position" (August 1991, Mix Magazine). The Makoché control room features Urei 813 time aligned monitors with a custom Morrison mosfet amplifier, KRK near fields with a Hafler amp, an isolated equipment room and an adjacent isolation booth accessed through the control room only.

  Main Room

The main room measures approximately 50 x 30 with 16 foot ceilings, hardwood floors, oak walls and variable acoustics. The oak wall panels can be opened to change the walls from a hard surface to an absorptive one. This varies the acoustic characteristics of the room from a 2.5 second decay to less than 1 second.

  Isolation Booth #1

Isolation Booth #1 is a small (approximately 9' x 12') "dead" room which is accessed directly from the control room and most often used for vocal and instrumental overdubs. Full glass doors provide clean sight lines, and proximity to the control room keeps contact intimate between artist and producer.

Isolation Booth #2

Isolation Booth #2 measures approximately 15' x 15' and is a "dead" room. The booth is most often used as an overdub or vocal booth, but is large enough to double as a very tight sounding drum room. Windows and glass doors provide open sight lines to the main room and Isolation Booth #3.

  Isolation Booth #3

Most often used as a drum booth, this 25' x 15' room has 16 foot ceilings, a stone floor and 10 foot mirrored variable acoustic doors. When world renowned jazz drummer Alan Dawson christened the room in 1991 he called it "the best sounding drum booth I've ever been in." Rock drummer Bob Zwarte referred to it as giving him "The biggest sounding drums I've ever had on tape."
